Åbyhem Nursing Home | Klippans Municipality, Sweden
In October 2023, Åbyhem Nursing Home in Klippans Municipality, Sweden, celebrated the grand opening of its extensively renovated facility, which now features 20 state-of-the-art Bano bathrooms.
Following the reopening, we had the opportunity to speak with Jessica Gullstrand, the coordinator of the Safiren department, about their experience with the new Bano bathrooms and the solutions they selected to enhance the comfort and safety of their residents.
Maintaining privacy when facing disability and aging
Did you know that we spend approximately a year and a half of our lives in the bathroom, with a significant portion of that time spent on the toilet? On average, each person spends around one hour and 42 minutes per week on the toilet, adding up to nearly 92 days over a lifetime. This time becomes even more significant in old age when mobility challenges often necessitate assistance.
With this in mind, we developed the Bano bathroom concept, featuring innovative turnable toilets designed to reduce the need for assistance. By minimizing the need for help in the bathroom, these solutions allow individuals to maintain their privacy and dignity. For many elderly people, the loss of independence in such intimate moments can be particularly difficult. With Åbyhem Nursing Home now equipped with our Bano toilets, residents can enjoy greater autonomy and preserve their sense of dignity.
Reduced need for assistive devices in the bathroom
The bathrooms at Åbyhem Nursing Home are now equipped with advanced Bano turnable toilets featuring electric height adjustment. Additionally, they have installed Bano washbasins that can be manually raised and lowered, each fitted with sturdy support handles to ensure a secure grip and enhance safety.
According to Jessica, both caregivers and residents are very pleased with these upgrades. She highlights that residents now require fewer assistive devices, particularly when transitioning on and off the toilet.
Bathrooms are typically full of slippery, wet surfaces, which can increase the risk of accidents. However, with the Bano turnable toilet, residents feel more secure thanks to its excellent support and grip features. Because these toilets allow users to get right up to the seat using mobility aids, fewer transfers are necessary—significantly reducing the risk of falls, as many accidents occur during these transitions.

The turnable toilet also makes life easier for the staff by reducing the number of heavy lifts and minimizing the need for awkward working positions. With fewer assistive devices required, staff members enjoy better access and a more efficient workflow.
When asked if they would recommend the Bano bathroom concept to others, Jessica enthusiastically replies, “Absolutely! We are so satisfied that we have recommended the Bano bathroom concept to other institutions.”
The Bano bathroom concept is also making a positive impact in other parts of Europe, and we’re proud to share its success. For example, you can read about the Atrium Nursing Home in the Netherlands, where the Bano bathroom has greatly benefited residents.
