Djupängen Nursing Home | Hammarö Municipality, Sweden
When Djupängen Nursing Home in Hammarö Municipality, Sweden, set out to build a new nursing home, it was crucial to involve the staff in the process. This ensured the creation of a home that not only supports employees’ health and work routines but also places the needs of the residents at the forefront.
In this article, you can explore the approach behind the new nursing home, take a virtual tour, and read about how daily life has changed for both caregivers and residents.
Staff Chose the Bano Bathroom Concept
To gain insight into the process, we spoke with Ulrica Björkman, Unit Manager at Djupängen Nursing Home. She explains that before the new nursing home was built, the project was put out for tender. Among the submissions, Bano was selected to set up a demo bathroom with our solutions.
The staff then had the opportunity to test the various bathrooms and provide feedback on what worked well and what their needs were. This ensured that the staff were heard and could influence the design of their own work environment. The caregivers also possess valuable knowledge about the residents’ challenges, which further guaranteed that their needs were also met, and Bano was ultimately chosen.
We are, of course, proud that the staff and management at Djupängen Nursing Home chose Bano, especially after they actually built and tested our concept before making a decision.

How Does This Work in Practice?
The bathroom is comprehensively equipped with secure grab bars for a good grip and its own shower seat. “The residents now have the opportunity to live a more independent life thanks to the Bano concept. They are more self-sufficient, especially as the shower seats grant them more independence,” Ulrica explains.
Additionally, the toilet can be raised and lowered, making it easier for residents to sit down and stand up, while also relieving staff from heavy lifting. While residents still need assistance from the staff, it has become easier for caregivers to assist them.
It’s also easier for those using mobility aids to move closer to the toilet, as both the toilet and sink can be adjusted in height. This provides ample legroom under the sink, allowing residents to wash their hands comfortably.
A New Daily Life
We asked Ulrica if the staff were happy with the Bano concept and what has been the gretest advantage for them.
Ulrica says, “It’s a big advantage that the bathrooms can be adapted to each individual, as their daily condition may vary, and new residents arrive. Both the sink and the Turnable Tolet can be adjusted in height, which benefits both residents and caregivers. This was crucial in our choice of Bano.”
She adds that the staff have been very positive. Transitioning from a 40-year-old care home to a modern home full of assistive devices has been significant. The best part for the staff is being able to adjust the height and have good grips when helping residents. “We’ve actually seen an increase in staff satisfaction, and we have less sick leave than before!” Ulrica concludes.
Take a Look Inside

The Bano concept is also available for private homes. Here you can read about how Gunnar had a Bano bathroom installed after a bicycle accident.
Finally, we ask if they would recommend the Bano bathroom concept to others considering upgrading or building new bathrooms in nursing homes. The answer is very encouraging: “We would definitely recommend the Bano concept to other nursing homes! We are very pleased with what we have.”
